It could be argued that professional sports are just another extension of pop culture.
An avenue of entertainment that includes competition, and fitness of not only body, but of mind too.
I’ve always had an interest in sports. As a kid I had an Edmonton Oilers jersey, and would cheer on anyone else other than my dad’s Montreal Canadiens. You could say I was a little shit disturber.
That seemed to transfer over into my tweenage years, when I decided to pick the teams I would cheer on. I grew up in the 905, the suburbs of Toronto. Needless to say, my non-conformist brain required me to like teams that weren’t local.
Ergo, instead of liking the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs, I opted for the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Blackhawks. During the early ’90s these were winning teams. As was my favourite National Football League team, the New Orleans Saints.
In those days, it was Eric Davis, Jeremy Roenick and Bobby Hebert who were the anchors of each of those teams. The Reds won the World Series in 1990, and in 1992, the Chicago Blackhawks made it to the Stanley Cup. The Saints, however, choked every time they made the playoffs during the ’90s.
Regardless here are the 25 teams I’ll root for, when not working as a sport reporter/editor. Now, I don’t root for all these teams. Admittedly, it gets pretty thin after the Raptors, but yeah, they are teams I don’t mind.
