Jaguars drop match 6-0 to visiting York Mills squad
A.Y. Jackson Jaguars got caught with their defence down the field.
Far too often a potent York Mills attack was ahead of the Jaguars final line, getting great leading passes and scoring on a chilly April 28. The final result was 6-0.
Jags coach Evan Georgio admitted the Titans blew his girls out of the water, but attributed it to the lack of ball movement.
“If we pick up our game defensively and start to distribute the ball to our wingers we’ll do much better,” he said. “We’re just bringing the ball in the middle and it’s creating a lot of traffic.”
Throughout the first half, York Mills was inside A.Y.’s zone, but the Jaguars, with the help of Celine Yu, managed to fight them off.
Twenty minutes of pressing two back-to-back goals by Summyr Witter-Rhule left Jags goalie Maggie Burton-Vulovic dazed.
Witter-Rhule would contribute an assist on a third goal by Taylor Linds to end the half.
To begin the first, Agnes Lee would score on a shot that squirted loose from Burton-Vulovic’s grasp.
Adding to an already unbalanced score, Janna Golzari of York Mills would thread the needle through three defenders and kick the ball short side for her first mark of the game.
A second Golzari goal would come not long after.
Titans coach Tim Heffernan commended his charges for a job well done, and for coming together in such a short time.
“They’re gelling pretty well together and it’s just a question of keeping the organization that they’ve developed and playing to their strengths,” he said.
Still, a surprising turn came when star striker Golzari was booked for arguing with the referee.
Sent off for about five minutes, she would return. Heffernan admitted his player lost her cool.
“It was just one of those things that a girl got a little upset and she was in the wrong,” he said.
Though the game was one-sided, forward Yu was hopeful her team would pull together for their next match.
“Although it was a tough game both teams played well,” she said, adding less crowding in the midfield and more passing are crucial for victory.
