The Five

The Five Songs of 2024

It’s that time of year again. I pick five songs from the year and then post them here to make it look like I still work in media.

I must admit, 2024 has been an intriguing year. I had a talking role in a horror movie (V/H/S/Beyond), wrote a book and got a new job, returning once again to the familiar confines of media after a brief layover in marketing.

With all that hustling, it was tough to tap into what was happening music-wise. I still managed to pay some attention as my daughter is reaching the age of being in tune with the musical trends.

I tend to lean into rock, but I do listen to EDM, country and other genres to a limited degree. Although Sabrina Carpenter doesn’t crack my Top 5, I do have a fondness for the song “Espresso”. Dr. Defiant’s “Mental Games” was a great electronic track. I appreciated the albums Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves and Postcards from Texas by Miranda Lambert too.

Song: “Get It On”
Album: Love Out Of Lemons
Artist: Bones Owen
Release: July 12, 2024
Why: Upbeat, toe-tap-worthy bluesy rock ditty. Solid banger that I randomly discovered through iTunes.

Song: “Indifferent”
Album: Am I Okay?
Artist: Megan Moroney
Release: July 12, 2024
Why: Perhaps I use the word indifferent too much. I also use the words subtle, nonplussed and well … an expletive best not repeated here. Still, I enjoyed this country jam.

Song: “Texas Hold’em”
Album: Cowboy Carter
Artist: Beyoncé
Release: February 11, 2024
Why: Whether or not Beyoncé’s voyage into the avenues of Nashville was a political move or not, this jam is a solid dance beat that infuses Top 40 with country. It’s solid and it plays off of all those woes that Texans have to deal with all while going to that dive bar they always thought was nice.

2.

Song: “Let’s Go”
Album: Messed Up
Artist: Bleeker
Release: June 28, 2024
Why: Since rock isn’t the music industry’s go-to for moola, it’s hard to discover new rock jams unless your YouTube/Spotify algorithm is dipping into those waters, or you play sports video games. This jam from Orillia, Ontario quartet Bleeker is on the soundtrack for NHL24.

Song: “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”
Album: Where I’ve Been Isn’t Where I’m Going
Artist: Shaboozey
Release: April 12, 2024
Why: A short little ditty about getting drunk and washing away your sorrows. It might come in handy when America wakes up to their new president in 2025 and the fascist oligarchy that comes with it. Oh, it’ll work for Canadians too when we predictively elect our next leader who is Republican light.
